Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was laid to rest Friday in Eternal Hills cemetery in his native Oceanside, California, following a funeral service that was held earlier at Calvary Chapel. Seau’s family members, friends, and former teammates, such as LaDainian Tomlinson and Marcellus Wiley were among the mourners in attendance. Meanwhile, thousands of fans flocked to San Diego’s Qualcomm stadium just a half an hour away to pay their respects during a memorial service for the deceased NFL star.
Seau was found dead on May 2nd in his Oceanside home, the result of a self-inflicted gunshot would to the chest. Adam Riojas, the outreach minister at Calvary Chapel, told the media that the family was having a difficult time dealing with Seau’s death. “They’re taking it very hard, the mother, especially the mother, she’s taking it really hard, it’s been tough,” Riojas said.
Of the twenty years that Seau played in the NFL, thirteen of those were played in San Diego, during which time he was an anchor for the Chargers defense and an icon for the greater San Diego area. Although it still isn’t entirely clear what motivated Junior Seau to take his own life, what is clear is that he will be sorely missed by millions of adoring fans not only in San Diego, but throughout the nation.
